Got Your 6 Welcomes Eight Nonprofits to Veteran Empowerment Coalition
WASHINGTON (October 18, 2017) – The national veteran empowerment organization Got Your 6 today welcomed eight new members to its Veteran Empowerment Coalition, focused on expanding opportunities for veterans to serve and lead in their communities. New coalition members include Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP), Bunker Labs, COMMIT Foundation, Global War On Terrorism Memorial Foundation (GWOTMF), Outward Bound Veterans, VetTix, Veterans Campaign, and Wounded Warrior Project.
With these new members, the Got Your 6 Veteran Empowerment Coalition now totals 42 nonprofit partners who serve as the campaign’s subject matter experts on military, veteran, and family issues in communities across the nation. Established in 2013 through the support of Macy’s, members of the Veteran Empowerment Coalition have received more than $6.3 million in funding raised by Macy’s customers and associates, impacting the lives of more than 2.1 million veterans and military families on issue areas related to employment, education, and health and well being.
“The addition of these eight nationally recognized nonprofits to the Veteran Empowerment Coalition reinforces our commitment to delivering innovative and collaborative results for our veterans, military families, and servicemembers,” said Iraq War veteran and Got Your 6 Executive Director Bill Rausch. “As our annual Veterans Civic Health Index demonstrates, veterans are proving to be tremendous civic assets and are actively leading back home. These coalition members are welcome additions to our diverse group of nonprofits working in every small town and big city across America to support and empower our veterans.”
“The Armed Services Arts Partnership is deeply grateful to join the Got Your 6 Veteran Empowerment Coalition,” said ASAP Executive Director, Sam Pressler. “The arts allow our veterans to tell their own stories on their own terms. The arts encourage our veterans to build supportive communities. And, the arts empower our veterans to serve again as mentors, teaching artists, and leaders. We look forward to collaborating with Got Your 6 and our Veteran Empowerment Coalition partners to project our veterans’ authentic stories and strengthen our communities.”
“Bunker Labs is thrilled to be a partner in the Got Your 6 Veteran Empowerment Coalition,” said Todd Connor, Founder and CEO of Bunker Labs. “We know how important it is to speak to the aspirations of military veterans: to continue to be leaders, of service to others, or as entrepreneurs building the next great business. The Got Your 6 coalition is at the forefront of this movement and we are honored to do our part.”
“The COMMIT Foundation is honored to join the exceptional organizations that comprise the Got Your 6 Veteran Empowerment Coalition. We are dedicated to ensuring deserving servicemembers find fulfillment and success post-service, and we will continue to provide the tools and support to enable successful military to civilian career transition. The COMMIT team looks forward to developing and expanding partnerships with our fellow coalition members in service to our nation’s finest,” said Anne Meree Craig, COMMIT Foundation Executive Director.
“GWOTMF is excited to be joining Got Your 6’s Veteran Empowerment Coalition,” said Andrew J. Brennan, founder of the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation. “Got Your 6 has had a tremendous impact in the military and veteran community in a short span of time, as they continue to highlight what is right about our community and help communicate that more broadly to the civilian populace in our nation. We are proud to be joining the coalition, where all of the member organizations make our community and country better.”
“Outward Bound is humbled and excited to join the Got Your 6 Veteran Empowerment Coalition,” said Outward Bound USA Executive Director, Peter Steinhauser. “By joining forces with organizations who are also committed to serving veterans, we believe we can increase our impact and advance our vision of resilient veterans committed to continued service with their families, their communities, and our country. Outward Bound’s wilderness expeditions provide veterans the opportunity to experience the healing power of the great outdoors and to share that experience and camaraderie with other veterans. It’s an honor to serve those who serve and to partner with organizations who share that passion.”
“Veterans Campaign is honored to join the Got Your 6 Empowerment Coalition in our shared mission of empowering veterans to serve as civic leaders and raising awareness of veterans as civic assets to our country and communities” said Veterans Campaign Executive Director Seth Lynn. “We are excited for the opportunities to collaborate with these extraordinary organizations to better serve the ‘Next Greatest Generation’ of America’s leaders.”
“Wounded Warrior Project has had the honor of working with Got Your 6 on veteran-focused initiatives for years, and we are proud to join Got Your 6’s Veteran Empowerment Coalition as we continue to collaborate on ways to be more impactful and strengthen, empower, and enrich the lives of warriors and their families,” said René Bardorf, Wounded Warrior Project® senior vice president of government and community relations. “It’s exciting to be a part of this coalition and to work creatively with a diverse group of partners to honor veterans’ service to our nation.”
The new members of the Veteran Empowerment Coalition include:
The Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) helps veterans, service members, and military families reintegrate into their communities through the arts. ASAP promotes expression, skill-development, and camaraderie through classes, workshops, and performances across a variety of artistic disciplines. ASAP’s focus on consistent programs and partnerships ensures that members of its community have continuous opportunities for artistic and personal growth. ASAP’s approach provides participants with transferable life skills, a renewed sense of purpose, and healing benefits, and strengthens ties between veterans and their communities through the arts.
Bunker Labs is a national nonprofit organization built by military veteran entrepreneurs to empower other military veterans to start and grow businesses. Through local chapters in 16 cities and our online platforms, Bunker Labs provides educational programming, mentors, events, and thriving local communities to help veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses succeed and thrive as entrepreneurs. We recognize the entrepreneurial potential of the military experience and work to ensure that every member of the military community has the network and resources to realize this potential.
The mission of The COMMIT Foundation is to help American Veterans find purpose, both personally and professionally, as they transition from military careers to civilian life. The organization creates serendipity for men and women separating from the uniformed services and entering the professional civilian world. COMMIT creates tailored solutions for Veteran talent and is reaching Veterans across the Nation through high impact Mentoring Workshops and One on One Transition Assistance programs. Support includes mentorship and networking, skills assessments, resume assistance, coaching and other professional development opportunities. COMMIT also works with corporate partners, assisting and training company leadership and human resource professionals on how best to source, engage and integrate veteran talent within organizations.
The Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation is the Congressionally designated non-profit whose mission is to provide the organizing, fundraising, and coordinating efforts to build a memorial on the National Mall in Washington D.C. to honor our fallen warriors, U.S. service members, their families, and all those who supported our nation’s longest war. The organization has been in existence since 2014, and with Congressional designation via the passage of H.R. 873, GWOTMF is now focused on raising the estimated $30-$40 million that will be required to build the National Global War on Terrorism Memorial.
Outward Bound Veterans helps returning service members and veterans readjust to life at home through powerful wilderness courses that draw on the healing benefit of teamwork and challenge through use of the natural world. Veterans take part in custom-designed wilderness expeditions in some of our nation’s most awe-inspiring and beautiful wilderness areas at no cost to the veteran. Wilderness activities are used as metaphors for daily life experiences in the pursuit of individual and group excellence, illuminating how the support and collaboration needed to meet Outward Bound goals can positively impact participants’ interactions with others at home. Many veterans experienced courage, brotherhood and a real sense of power and competence while in combat. Outward Bound Veterans gives veterans the opportunity to re-experience these strengths in themselves in a civilian context, reminding them that their military training is a base that they can build on to overcome any challenge as they transition to civilian lives.
Veteran Tickets Foundation (VetTix) is a national nonprofit organization that assists veterans, service members and their families by providing free event tickets to sporting events, concerts, performing arts and family events. Vet Tix does this as a way to thank veterans and currently serving military members for the service and sacrifices made during their military service. By attending these events, veterans are assisted in helping reduce stress, strengthening family bonds, building lifelong memories, enhancing resiliency and encouraging them to stay engaged with their local communities, fellow veterans, and other quality veteran organizations. Since its creation in 2008, Vet Tix has built a base of over 640,000 members, distributed over three million event tickets; of which over one million have been distributed in the last year.
Veterans Campaign is a non-partisan, non-ideological organization whose mission is to encourage, mentor, and prepare transitioning service members, veterans and affiliates of the military community to pursue a “second service” in civic and political leadership. Through mentoring and advising, intensive workshops, research, partnerships, and our flagship Second Service Fellowship, our community of distinguished public servants and emerging leaders strive to empower the next Greatest Generation of leaders of our communities and our country.
Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) honors and empowers warriors by providing free programs and services to address the needs of wounded warriors and fill gaps in government care. We CONNECT warriors, their families, and caregivers to peers, programs and communities. We SERVE by providing free mental and physical health and wellness programming, career and benefits counseling, and support for the most severely injured.
