Got Your 6 and HBO to Showcase Veteran Empowerment in NYC on October 26
WASHINGTON (Oct. 19, 2016) — The veteran empowerment campaign Got Your 6 is teaming up with HBO to host its “Storytellers” program on October 26 at HBO’s New York City theater. Got Your 6 Storytellers is an annual event that celebrates the accomplishments and inspirational stories of our nation’s veterans.
The October 26 event will feature veterans including Commissioner of the Office of Veterans’ Service for the City of Boston, Giselle Sterling; cosmetologist and activist Sharay Santora; Albany, NY, police officer Zee Kitonyi; and Team Red, White & Blue Director of Leadership Development, Joe Quinn.
Got Your 6 Storytellers gathers veterans who deliver TED-style talks about their ideas, accomplishments, philosophies, and the many contributions they are making in their communities and workplaces. The fourth annual Storytellers talks will be live-streamed at www.facebook.com/GotYourSix and later distributed online. Videos from the 2015 event were viewed more than three million times.
“Our partnership with HBO will help increase awareness of Got Your 6’s campaign to shift the narrative of veterans as “broken heroes” to one focusing on veterans as leaders and civic assets,” said Bill Rausch, Iraq War veteran and executive director of Got Your 6. “Veterans are some of the most talented leaders, entrepreneurs, and entertainers in America, and it’s time for our country to hear their remarkable stories.”
A study commissioned by Got Your 6 revealed that the general population believes veterans are more likely than civilians to be unemployed, undereducated, homeless, and to be afflicted with mental health issues. The reality is much more complex, and the entertainment industry can play a role in changing the narrative.
In addition to the New York event, Got Your 6’s Storytellers program will also be held in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Television Academy, and in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Nov. 10, at Discovery Communications (Silver Spring, MD). Got Your 6 Storytellers is made possible by the generous support of Macy’s, Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans United Foundation, Aspen Dental, American Express, Discovery Communications, HBO, Television Academy, NFLPA, General Dynamics, and Sword & Plough.
About Got Your 6
Got Your 6 is a national campaign dedicated to empowering veterans and strengthening communities across the nation. The campaign unites cross-sector partners who believe that veterans are uniquely suited to tackle society’s most pressing challenges. Got Your 6 believes that veterans are best served when they continue their service here at home. As a coalition, Got Your 6 integrates these perspectives into popular culture, brings together veterans and non-veterans in order to foster understanding, and empowers veterans to lead a resurgence of community here at home.
