Day 1: #DemsInPhilly
Posted July 26, 2016 by Kate Hoit
The Got Your 6 team is at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia for the next three days. Our goal is to bring our #VetInspired message to the forefront of both conventions. Here’s what we have planned.
Yesterday, we spent the day meeting with fellow veterans and listening to speakers at the Wells Fargo Center. Many veterans we chatted with discussed Sec. Hillary Clinton’s remarks at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention earlier in the day. She told those listening—veterans, family members, and loved ones—they deserve a commander-in-chief who “honors your service not just with words, but with deeds.” And that commitment to veterans is what we’ll be listening for over the next few days.
The night was filled with speeches from First Lady Michelle Obama, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and representatives from across the United States. It was sprinkled with stories from citizens who have traveled to share their experiences as immigrants, educators, athletes, and to those with loved ones battling addictions. The speakers’ reminded those in the audience—and at home—how diverse and complex we are as a nation. As FLOTUS said in her speech, “…the issues a president faces are not black and white and cannot be boiled down to 140 characters.” And that sentiment echoed off the walls in the Wells Fargo Center with each personal story that was told.
As we embark on day two, we live-streamed the VFW convention to hear Secretary Bob McDonald discuss the progress VA has made and plans for the future—issues that will undoubtedly be discussed at the DNC. We’ll head downtown to listen to a panel on veteran training and employment. And meet with veterans from around the country to hear what they have to say. As always, we’ll share our message of empowering veterans!
