Empowering Veterans and Military Families to Employment Success

Every day, 500 military veterans change out of their uniforms into civilian lives. These veterans need employment and support services to ensure they can provide for their families and live lives of dignity in the country whose freedom they helped secure.

At Goodwill®, we are committed to connecting veterans and their families with work, homes and the supports they need to be successful. In 2011, we provided employment placement services and other community-based programs to more than 44,000 veterans, military spouses and their families, placing more than 1,000 in jobs.

We look to match those figures in 2012 and beyond, thanks in part to our role as the national activation partner for Got Your 6, a nationally focused collective impact campaign led by the entertainment industry and national nonprofits that will help create a new conversation in America, one where veterans and military families are perceived as both leaders and civic assets. Collectively, Got Your 6 partners will prepare and place 500,000 veterans in sustainable employment over the course of the campaign.

These efforts by Goodwill and community partners help ensure positive outcomes for veterans like Jason Tobey, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and completed tours in Desert Hope, Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

“After my honorable discharge from the military, I expected that my service would make me a sought-after candidate. Instead, I found that both companies and society did not always look favorably upon this first Gulf War or the servicemen and women involved,” he explains.

After connecting with a Goodwill microenterprise program, Tobey started his own business, Semper Fi Security, where he now pays it forward by employing other veterans and their immediate family members.

Educating employers and the public about the challenges veterans and military families face as they enter the civilian workforce is also key to ensuring sustainable support for this population in the long run. In our Homefront Chats initiative, veterans document their journeys from military service to civilian employment via video diary entries.

Goodwill looks forward to continuing our relationship with Got Your 6 in 2013 and serving our military heroes as they transition from deployment to employment.
