Don’t Believe We Can End Veteran Homelessness? Meet San Diego County

100,000 Homes Campaign
With 68,000 veterans experiencing homelessness on any given night, ending veteran homelessness can seem like a lofty goal. In fact, when people hear about the 100,000 Homes Campaign’s commitment through Got Your 6 to help communities house 10,000 chronically homeless veterans in two years, many reluctantly admit that they just don’t believe it’s possible. You won’t hear talk like that in San Diego, though. Instead, you’ll meet a countywide team that has permanently housed 65 homeless veterans in the last 68 days—and they have no plans to stop any time soon. The San Diego County team, which consists of representatives from federal agencies like HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as local groups like the San Diego Department of Housing and Community Development, United Way, the Continuum of Care for the Homeless, and the San Diego Housing Commission, is about three quarters of the way through a 100-day sprint to house as many chronically homeless veterans as possible. At 65, they are just ten veterans shy of their ambitious goal of 75, but don’t expect them to stop there. The mad dash began in May at a unique event called Rapid Results Boot Camp. The two-day event, co-led by the 100,000 Homes Campaign and the Rapid Results Institute, asked communities to take a hard look at the reasons veterans remain homeless on their streets and then dream big about what it would take to overcome those obstacles. Members of the San Diego team quickly agreed that their system for housing homeless veterans was vastly overcomplicated. It was bureaucratic and redundant, and it took far too long for homeless veterans to navigate. So, the group set out to make the process simpler and faster—so much faster, they hoped, that 75 chronically homeless veterans would be able to escape homelessness in the next 100 days. The first thing team members did was to give themselves less time to waste. Typically, housing subsidies for chronically homeless veterans have to be used within 120 days. Naturally, most communities take the full time allowed. The San Diego team created urgency by cutting the time period in half, forcing itself to house veterans faster or lose the chance to house them at all. Second, the team developed a regularly updated list of temporary places for veterans to stay while they awaited permanent housing. This has already cut down on the time veterans have to spend homeless, while reducing the risk of veterans disappearing or dying on the streets before permanent housing becomes available. Finally, the team has mobilized volunteers from throughout the county to donate and collect gently used home furnishings so that no veteran moves into a permanent apartment without all the comforts of home. Today, the county’s data speaks for itself. On day 1 of the 100-day blitz, San Diego County was housing an average of 14 homeless veterans per month. Just sixty-eight days later, that number has more than doubled to 30! At this rate, the San Diego team is on track not only to exceed its initial goal of 75, but also to house as many as 100 homeless veterans before 100 days are up. That’s an average of one per day! The best news is that San Diego County is just one success story among many. More than 15 other communities are in the midst of 100-day sprints of their own, and many are discovering that they are capable of far more than they ever thought possible. Together, these communities are proving that we can end homelessness for 10,000 veterans in the next two years, and for every veteran before long. That’s what it means to have our veterans’ six.
Please let me know how I might volunteer my time to assist our veterans.

I am currently active duty and watched the video and I was really moved that there are people like you out there that still cares for us. Anyway, I would like to ask help on how I can be able to get home for me and my two sons. I don’t want to be homeless in the future after I finish my term especially I have two special sons.
Thank you for your service! Please email info@gotyour6.org to get more information #GotYour6
I would really like to see Gotyour6 try to get the returning vets eqaul opportunity. Right now some returning vets have to face racial discrimination under federal affirmative action laws BY THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT.THIS IS A DISGRACE! A man that serves his country should have equal opprotunity when seeking employment.I know everybody wants to hide this (Probably including your organization),but please do the right right thing so these men do not have to face discrimination .Thank you
I am a 90% OEF/ OIF veteran who is a single mother of a 13 year old daughter. We have now been homeless since June. The veteran homeless line advertised on TV does nothing as when I called they sent me back to my local area. In my area in Oregon there are no resources available. We have been bouncing from hotel to campground for almost 6 months now. I am spending my whole disability check on rent as hotels are about $1600 a month plus. I have no way to save up for first last and security deposits as it all goes to the hotels. I have to go to food banks and live out of cans and a microwave if lucky enough to have one in a room. To top it all off my daughter has been in 3 schools this year already, therefore I have pulled her from school and have enrolled her in online school as we had to move again last night. I can’t access my VA federal home loan as my credit is not good enough. I have never been in such a desperate position. Until now I was an EMT, CNA, and RN student. However, due to my current predicament I cannot even get a job due to the constant moving, lack of transportation and the biggest one no permanent address. I personally know of seven other single parent veterans in this area some with multiple children in the same position in this small town. All of these programs that people are saying are available and that people “got your six” is not evident anywhere around here. I am so tired and desperate at this point that if it was not for my military composure and training I probably would have already had the impending nervous breakdown as I feel I am going to have soon if things don’t change. I don’t know what else to do as I have exhausted all resources and options. The best part is due to my disability I don’t qualify for 98% of all state programs. The state medical program is the only one I qualify for and it’s for my daughter only. So now I have thousands of dollars in medical bills because the regional VA won’t transfer me to my local clinic which I have been trying now for over three years. The regional VA won’t even mail me my PTSD meds either so I have been off them for 2 months which is just the cherry on top of the cake. Now because of that I am having to look at filing bankruptcy as well. I am at a lost and don’t know what else to do. I literally don’t know what else to do or where else to turn so why not give this a try, ANY IDEAS OUT THERE?
Hey Jones I feel ya. Not a single parent but a veteran myself living transiently having lost my home. when I got back from Iraq after involuntary extension due to stop loss I was shoved out the door as soon as I returned from block leave. we were told we had some 120 days remaining in service for transition assistance program and took leave for thirty days. Upon return we were informed DA changed thir minds and they pushed us all out the gate within ten days – over 3,000 stop lossed troops from 1st Cav – no TAP program, not even DA physicals as they lacked the capacity. I too have found TONS of rhetoric and information pertaining to the funding allocations, studies, campaigns and glorious outreach programs EVERYONE is carrying on about these days but it’s tantamount to eyewash if a veteran in need can’t “click here if you are a vet we can help”. from what I have seen the quickest way to get on your feet may well be to get a web page with an inspirational title and patriotic catch phrase.
